A new study by researchers at the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, has found a significant association between low levels of several vitamins and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among older adults. Published in the journal Nutrients, the study examined 184 adults aged between 55 and 85 years in Hyderabad. Researchers assessed participants’ cognitive function and analysed blood samples for several vitamins, including vitamins A, D, B1, B2, B6, B9 and B12, alongside neuronal biomarkers.

NIN Study Finds Strong Link Between Vitamin Levels and Cognitive Health

The study found that 36.4% of the participants had mild cognitive impairment. Researchers observed that participants with MCI generally had lower blood levels of several vitamins compared with those without the condition.

The vitamins associated with lower levels among participants with MCI included vitamins D, B1, B2, B6, B9 and B12.

Vitamin D, B2 and B9 deficiencies were particularly common in the MCI group, making these nutrients an important focus of the research findings.

However, the results should be interpreted as an association rather than proof that vitamin deficiency directly causes cognitive impairment. The study design does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship, and further research is needed to determine whether correcting nutritional deficiencies can prevent or reverse MCI.

What Is Mild Cognitive Impairment?

Mild cognitive impairment refers to noticeable changes in memory or thinking abilities that are greater than expected with normal ageing but do not necessarily prevent a person from performing everyday activities independently.

The NIN research also highlighted several B vitamins.

Lower levels of vitamins B1, B2, B6, B9 and B12 were observed among participants with MCI. Vitamin B2 and folate, or vitamin B9, were among the deficiencies particularly common in the MCI group.

B vitamins play important roles in normal metabolism and neurological function. However, the study does not mean that taking high-dose supplements will necessarily prevent cognitive decline.

Instead, the findings support the importance of identifying nutritional deficiencies and addressing them appropriately, particularly among older adults.

Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure Also Matter

The research found that participants with MCI also had higher blood glucose levels and higher systolic blood pressure.
