India have suffered another major setback ahead of the Sri Lanka Test series, with in-form batter Sai Sudharsan ruled out of the entire two-match series because of a toe injury. His absence leaves India with another important selection headache ahead of the opening Test in Galle.
Sudharsan had initially been included in India’s Test squad subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence. However, the left-handed batter was ultimately unable to recover in time and has now been ruled out of the series.
The setback is particularly significant because Sudharsan had been building a strong case to become India’s preferred No. 3 batter in Test cricket.
Sai Sudharsan Ruled Out With Toe Injury
The latest injury update ends Sudharsan’s hopes of featuring in India’s two-Test tour of Sri Lanka.
The 24-year-old batter had been dealing with a toe injury and was racing against time to regain full fitness before the series. Medical advice ultimately meant that he would need more time to recover rather than risk returning prematurely.
Sudharsan’s absence comes at an unfortunate moment because his recent performances had strengthened his position in India’s Test plans.
He had been selected in the squad alongside Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal, with his availability initially dependent on fitness clearance.
Sudharsan Had Been in Excellent Form
The injury is an even bigger blow because Sudharsan had shown impressive form during India’s A tour of Sri Lanka.
He scored 132 runs in the first unofficial Test against Sri Lanka A before following it up with 168 runs in the second game. Those performances strengthened his credentials for the No. 3 position in India’s Test batting order.
His ability to score heavily in Sri Lankan conditions made his absence particularly disappointing for the Indian team.
Sudharsan had effectively used the A tour as an opportunity to adapt to local conditions and demonstrate that he could handle the challenges expected during the senior Test series.
Devdutt Padikkal Emerges as a Replacement Option
With Sudharsan unavailable, India now have to decide who should occupy the vacant No. 3 position.
One of the strongest candidates is Devdutt Padikkal, who has already made an impressive case during the warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI.
Padikkal scored an unbeaten century, putting himself firmly into contention for a place in the opening Test.
His performance could hardly have come at a better time for India.
The left-hander now has an opportunity to turn his strong warm-up showing into a place in the Test XI.
Sarfaraz Khan Also Added to India’s Squad
India have also responded to Sudharsan’s injury by bringing Sarfaraz Khan into the Test squad.
Sarfaraz was named as Sudharsan’s replacement for the two-Test series, giving India another specialist batting option.
His inclusion provides additional depth to India’s middle order, although the team management will still have to decide how best to balance the batting lineup.
The selection could become even more important if India encounter spin-friendly conditions in Sri Lanka.
India’s Injury Problems Continue
Sudharsan’s withdrawal is another addition to India’s growing injury list.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has already been ruled out of the Sri Lanka Tests because of a left knee problem. He was initially selected subject to fitness clearance but failed to recover sufficiently and was subsequently replaced by uncapped Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi.
Washington Sundar is also dealing with a hamstring injury, while other players have faced fitness concerns during India’s preparations.
As a result, India will enter the Sri Lanka series without several players who could have played important roles.
A Big Test for India’s Batting Depth
Sudharsan’s absence puts greater pressure on India’s remaining batters.
With the series expected to present challenging conditions, India’s top order will need to provide stability while also dealing with Sri Lanka’s spin attack.
Sudharsan’s performances for India A had suggested that he could have been a valuable option at No. 3. His replacement will now have to step into that role under considerably greater pressure.
The situation also gives India’s fringe batters an important opportunity to establish themselves.
India vs Sri Lanka Test Series Begins on August 15
The two-match India vs Sri Lanka Test series 2026 is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle, with the second Test set to take place in Colombo from August 23.
The series is significant for both sides as part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
India will therefore be eager to overcome their injury problems and start the campaign strongly.
Without Sudharsan and Bumrah, however, the visitors will have to rely heavily on their squad depth.
Sudharsan’s Absence Opens a New Opportunity
While Sudharsan’s injury is undoubtedly disappointing, it also creates an opportunity for another Indian batter.
Padikkal has already made a strong statement with his century in the warm-up game, while Sarfaraz brings considerable domestic experience to the squad.
The competition for the No. 3 position could therefore become one of the most interesting selection battles ahead of the first Test.
For Sudharsan, the priority will now be completing his recovery and returning to competitive cricket without taking unnecessary risks.
Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka because of a toe injury, dealing another blow to a team already facing several fitness concerns.
His recent performances, including centuries of 132 and 168 for India A against Sri Lanka A, had made him one of India’s most promising options for the No. 3 position.
With Sudharsan unavailable, Devdutt Padikkal and Sarfaraz Khan are among the players who could benefit from the situation, while India’s selectors must find the right combination ahead of the first Test in Galle.
For India, the challenge now is clear: overcome a growing injury crisis and begin the Sri Lanka Test series strongly despite losing one of their most in-form young batters.
