After experiencing a frantic 2,800-kilometre journey to reach the Ranji Trophy final earlier this year, the Jammu & Kashmir opener has arrived in Bengaluru well ahead of the Duleep Trophy 2026.
Iqbal reached the BCCI Centre of Excellence four days before the tournament, giving himself valuable time to settle in, prepare and focus on the challenge ahead. He is part of the North Zone squad that will begin its campaign against West Zone on August 23.
For the 24-year-old batter, the early arrival represents a significant change from the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his previous trip to Bengaluru.
From a 2,800 km Dash to a Calm Preparation
Iqbal’s previous Bengaluru trip remains one of the most unusual stories of his domestic cricket career.
On February 23, just one day before the Ranji Trophy final against Karnataka, Iqbal was at home in Srinagar when he received a call informing him that J&K needed him after opener Shubham Khajuria was ruled out with injury.
With approximately 2,800 kilometres separating Srinagar and Hubballi, Iqbal had little time to think.
He left Srinagar that same night, travelling through Delhi and Mumbai before eventually reaching Hubballi on the morning of the final. He arrived around an hour before the toss and went almost directly to the ground.
Despite the exhausting journey, Iqbal produced a remarkable performance.

Instead of being overwhelmed by the circumstances, Iqbal delivered arguably the most important innings of his career.
He scored an unbeaten 160 in the second innings of the Ranji Trophy final, helping Jammu & Kashmir secure their maiden Ranji Trophy title against Karnataka.

Iqbal later admitted that the journey was unusual and that he experienced some travel fatigue, but he did not allow it to affect his performance.

Qamran Iqbal Included in Strong North Zone Squad
Iqbal is one of six Jammu & Kashmir players selected in the North Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy 2026-27.
The side will be led by wicketkeeper-batter Kanhaiya Wadhawan, while Delhi all-rounder Ayush Badoni has been named vice-captain. India left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is also part of the squad.
Other J&K players selected include Abdul Samad, Abid Mushtaq, Sunil Kumar and Yudhvir Singh.
The representation reflects the progress of Jammu & Kashmir cricket following its historic Ranji Trophy campaign.
North Zone Face West Zone in Bengaluru
North Zone will begin its Duleep Trophy 2026 campaign against Ruturaj Gaikwad-led West Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
The match is scheduled to begin on August 23, with the winner advancing to face South Zone in the semifinal.
West Zone also boasts considerable experience, with players such as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prithvi Shaw, Sarfaraz Khan and Shardul Thakur included in the squad.
That makes the opening-round contest an important test for Iqbal and the rest of the North Zone batting lineup.
J&K’s Success Built on Better Preparation
Iqbal believes the success of Jammu & Kashmir cricket is not accidental.
He credited the management and support staff for creating a more structured domestic programme, including exposure tours and tournaments before the main domestic season.
According to Iqbal, these competitions give players the opportunity to face strong opposition before entering the Ranji Trophy campaign.
That preparation has helped J&K players develop greater confidence and become more accustomed to high-quality cricket.
Mithun Manhas’ Role Highlighted
Iqbal also praised Mithun Manhas, who he believes has played a major role in developing Jammu & Kashmir cricket.
He pointed to the structured off-season programme and the exposure provided to players through competitions such as the Buchi Babu Tournament.
The batter also credited coach Ajay Sharma for providing technical guidance and helping players prepare for the demands of domestic cricket.
The improvements extend beyond coaching.
Iqbal said J&K now has access to different types of playing surfaces, including turf, grass and spin-friendly wickets, allowing players to prepare for a wider range of match conditions.
Bigger Ambitions After Ranji Trophy Success
Winning the Ranji Trophy was a major milestone for Iqbal and his teammates, but the opener does not see it as the end of the journey.
Instead, he considers the historic title only the beginning.
His unbeaten 160 in the final has raised expectations, and the Duleep Trophy provides another opportunity to demonstrate his ability against some of India’s strongest domestic players.
A strong tournament could further strengthen Iqbal’s case as one of Jammu & Kashmir’s emerging batting talents.
From India Under-19 to Domestic Cricket
Iqbal’s journey began at a young age in Jammu & Kashmir cricket.
He progressed through the Under-14 and Under-16 levels before playing for North Zone and eventually reaching the India Under-19 setup.
Interestingly, he opened alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal during his time with India’s junior side. Iqbal was also part of the India Under-19 group that played several series before the 2020 Under-19 World Cup.
Although he narrowly missed selection for the World Cup squad, the experience provided valuable exposure to high-level cricket.
Now, several years later, Iqbal is looking to establish himself at the senior domestic level.
Duleep Trophy Offers Another Opportunity
The Duleep Trophy remains one of India’s most important domestic red-ball competitions.
The 2026-27 edition features six zones, with Central Zone entering directly at the semifinal stage as defending champions, while North, West, South, East and North East compete across the opening stages. All matches are being staged at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
For Iqbal, the tournament offers another chance to test himself against elite domestic opposition.
